what is happening with that. also on the show, one couple, twice the luck. the husband and wife with the astonishing double-win at the lottery. you won't believe what their planning to do with all that money they just won. we have to get right to a huge snowstorm. in fact, the biggest of the winter, on track for the northeast. could it be a lot of snow headed for some major cities? guess who we're going to ask. sa sam. >> models started to show this last night. we've had a split flow in the jet stream. we've had a northern jet and a southern jet. this has been small nuisancemakers and storms. but what begins to happen is those two positions start to phase together. let me get back to the graphic. i want to show you -- max, will you run that through. to the eastern side. here's what happens. these two lows that are right now, really far apart, get really close in sync and phase

off the eastern seaboard. where this happens depends who gets snow and who gets rain. it's going to happen from the carolinas towards probably boston. wherever this happens, there's a lot of snow with this storm and southern rain. there will be mixing, as well. as far as exact totals, we're not going to do that tonight into tomorrow. buffalo, albany, 6 to 12-inch snowfalls. new york, 3 to 6 for that area. philly, a little less. 1 to 3. boston, 12 to 24 inches of snow. some places in maine, two feet of snow. we have hours to put this storm together. they're really far apart right now. friday into saturday, we are expecting a big snowmaker. >> we'll be checking back with you, sam. let's turn to josh for the other stories of the morning. >> we mentioned the tsunami. a powerful earthquake triggered it in the south pacific. a 8.0 quake.

it triggered a five-foot tsunami. dozens of homes are damaged. at least four people have been confirmed killed. emergency crews are struggling to reach the very remote areas because the local airstrip is littered with debris. as news becomes available, we'll have updates for you this morning. a new revelation on the war on terror. a location of a secret cia base has been revealed this morning. adding to whether the controversial drone program is going too far. published reports say that the base in saudi arabia has been used to launch drone strikes against targets in yemen, including the one that killed american citizen, anwar al awlaki. a leaked memo from the obama administration claims u.s. citizens accused of being al-qaeda operatives may lawfully be killed even if there's no evidence of an imminent threat. john brennan, the president's nominee for cia director, will face tough questions about that memo in his confirmation hearing tomorrow.

and computer hackers have struck the federal reserve. the hacker group, anonymous, claims to have chosen data belonging to 4,000 bankers. no critical operations have been affected. and it's being called the largest credit card fraud in history. authorities arrested 18 people based in new jersey, accused of stealing some $200 million after creating thousands of fake i.d.s, with stolen social security numbers. using those fake i.d.s to obtain cards, the suspects allegedly wired money to seven countries, including pakistan and china. and abc news has learned that lance armstrong is the target of an active criminal investigation. federal agents are looking into possible obstruction of justice and witness tampering charges. today is the deadline for him to come clean, under oath, to anti-doping authorities if he wants his lifetime ban from sports reduced. a wild scene in florida this

morning. two people trapped inside the truck you see dangling off the side of a highway overpass in ft. lauderdale after it crashed. crews used a rope to secure the truck. brought in a tow truck to pull it in back off that ledge. a firefighter on a ladder secures everyone. one victim has been rushed to the hospital. no word on the condition of the driver. finally, a whale of a story. actually, two of them. first, an american tourist off the coast of mexico got the surprise of his young life. take a look at that. >> oh. >> as a whale breached just beneath her boat and nearly jumped completely out of the water. nobody was hurt. everybody was absolutely stunned. and then, a couple canoeing in hawaii, treated to a very special sight. a humpback up for a visit, to say hello. not the same whale, by the way. everybody shocked. everybody okay. >> incredible photo. >> it is. >> thanks very much.

we get the latest on little ethan, as he celebrates his sixth birthday at home today. we're learning details of the daring fbi raid on the underground bunker. gio benitez is in midland city, alabama. good morning, gio. >> reporter: good morning, george. these details are riveting. we were shocked to learn that just feet away from us, from all of the reporters, law enforcement officers were training to take out their suspect. abc news has learned bomb technicians have found two homemade explosives where the little boy named ethan was being held. one inside this homemade bunker. another inside this white vent ration pipe negotiators were using to communicate with hostagetaker, jimmy lee dykes. new photos show the entrance to the makeshift underground cell. sources say this is where the raid went down monday, after negotiators convinced dykes to approach the bunker hatch around

3:00 p.m. police knew he was armed. but sources say dykes had also fortified the door. fbi agents quickly set off an explosion. and a firefight began. abc news has learned, dykes fired on the agents first. they fired back. moments later, dykes was dead and little ethan was rushed from the bunker. >> in split-seconds, flash, bang, shoot, before mr. dykes would have an opportunity to react. >> reporter: sources say that's exactly what fbi agents did, rehearsing the raid not far from where the boy was being held. you can see the mock bunker the fbi built to train for different scenarios. >> you can practice breaching the door. you can practice having a camera inside. and ultimately design how you're going to assault this bunker. >> reporter: this morning, thanks to that raid, ethan is with his family. today is his sixth birthday. in a statement, his mother calls

him, the most beautiful sight. saying, how incredible it is to hold him again. and now, little ethan appears to be back to normal. as we said, he's been watching one of his favorite programs, "spongebob squarepants." >> gio, thank you very much. we have the latest on the shocking death of legendary american sniper and u.s. navy s.e.a.l. chris kyle. he was gunned down at a texas shooting range, by a marine veteran he had been trying to help. authorities released the 911 call made just after that shooting. and cecilia vega is here with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. these 911 tapes are really chilling. you can hear the suspect's sister rushing to get out of her house. she said her brother admitted to the shooting at the range. and she was terrified he might turn on her next. >> listen. my brother just came by here. and he told me that he's

committed a murder. >> reporter: laura blevins was terrified for her life. she says her brother, eddie routh, had showed up at her texas home saturday, and made a startling confession. >> he said that he killed two guys. they went to a shooting range. he's crazy. he's psychotic. >> reporter: police say the 25-year-old former marine snapped, turning his gun on two men at shooting practice with him. men who had been trying to help counsel him. >> i don't know if he's going to come back here. >> okay. >> i don't know if he's on drugs or not. >> reporter: investigators say routh shot point-blank former navy s.e.a.l. sniper, chris kyle, and his friend, 35-year-old chad littlefield, then stole kyle's pickup truck. >> i'm going to stay on the phone with you until you get here, okay? >> that would be great. >> reporter: unsure of what routh planned to do next, his sister headed for the police department. her husband took the phone. >> he was recently diagnosed with ptsd.

>> okay. >> and he's been acting a little weird. >> just got out of a mental hospital last week. >> reporter: routh stands accused of taking the life of a war hero who was one of the country's most decorated snipers. routh's family is convinced the same illness they say he was being treated for is also what caused him to snap. >> now, that's not who he is. >> reporter: now, the alleged shooter remains in jail. a public memorial service is planned on monday for kyle at cowboy stadium, amy. >> shows how much he was loved and revered by many. looking at the latest on olympic gold medalist lindsey vonn. she is nursing a fractured knee after crashing on a superg run in austria. the big question now, will she ever compete again? john muller is here with all the details. john, what a terrifying fall. >> reporter: it is one of the scariest moments in sports. america's golden girl of the slopes will have reconstructive

surgery on her knee back here in the u.s. her father told the associated press, she is mad at the way things turned out. she landed in a clump of ice crystals. and that caused the fall. now, the surgery and rehab, as she races that clock for the 2014 olympics. she is leading at the top. and it's about to go horribly wrong. watch in slow-motion, as the blazing lindsey vonn, launches 500 feet down the course. she loses her balance in the air, catches her right knee on impact and slams face-first into the slope. it doesn't look any better in real-time. the american olympic gold medalist and four-time world champion laid on the snow for 12, long minutes. finally air-lifted off the austrian alps to a hospital. >> she sustained an injury to her right know. and in addition to that, suffered a tibial plateau fracture. >> reporter: translation, her

right knee is done. she will not ski for the 2013 season. vonn is no stranger to injury. she's battled through injuries in six-straight major championships. in november, she was hospitalized with an intestinal illness. >> now, her thoughts are on getting back. getting through whatever is necessary medically after this. >> reporter: her larger-than-life persona has invited speculation. off the slopes, fascination with who she may be romantically linked to. the latest rumors, golf great tiger woods. she says their friends. on the slopes, it's all about the 2014 olympics, just one year away. >> nobody should be throwing a retirement party just yet for lindsey vonn. she can certainly recover from this injury. >> reporter: vonn's on crutches right now. her surgery takes place early next week in vail, colorado. she won't be back on skis for eight months. she is back on skis and being world-class is a very different things.

but she is in very good spirits. she has her eyes on that gold. >> john, thanks very much. >> so tough to watch. new jersey governor, chris christie, is now making big headlines for candid talks about his health and his weight. is it all part of his ramp-up for a possible presidential run? abc's dan harris has been tracking all of that. >> reporter: good morning. chris christie is coy about whether he's running for president in 2016. but he's taking some very public steps to deal with what, fairly or not, could be a major campaign issue. it was a brilliant sight gag. chris christie, sitting across from david letterman, who has lampooned the governor for his weight. and pulling out a doughnut. >> i didn't know this was go th. >> reporter: but making clear he takes this issue seriously. >> of course, i care about it. and i'm making the best effort i can. sometimes i'm successful. and other times i'm not. and sometimes periods of great success are followed by periods

of great failure. >> reporter: the spectacle of a male politician repeatedly having to address his looks, the way hillary clinton dealt with talk of her different hairstyles and pantsuits. and sarah palin with questions over her post-baby weight loss, strikes some observers fascinating. >> the fact that a man has to deal with questions of his appearance, is a real sign of the times. even a man who is a governor of a large state. >> reporter: connie mariano, who helped president clinton lose 30 pounds in office, said she cringed when she saw christie eating that doughnut. >> somebody of that size, i would assume they have issues regarding blood pressure and blood sugar. that's high risk for stroke and heart attack. >> reporter: christie says his own doctor has warned him, too. >> so far, up to 50 years old, i've been remarkably healthy. and my doctor continues to warn me that my luck will run out soon. >> reporter: and he insists he has a plan to deal with it. >> there is a plan.

police also found two small children in that apartment unharmed, but police have not said how that woman was killed and they also have not released her identity. another big story today, president barack obama will be in annapolis for the end of a democrat retreat. the event began yesterday where lawmakers talkd about gun control, imgrition and the latest fiscal crisis. the meetings end with a closed- door address from the president. time now for a check of the forecast with meteorologist lynette charles. >> let's talk about these temperatures this morning, coming in at 33 degrees in ellicott city. the fog starting to slowly but surely burn off. and the winds will pick up throughout the day as well. check on what's going on in ellicott city. we do have some clouds pushing in kro the area, but we are going to burn those off later in the afternoon, so we will get some sunshine in here before it's all said and done. high pressure will build in and we are looking for this system to move off the coast and we will have another system that's going to lurk. i'm going to talk about that in a second. but for today the high temperature coming in at 42 degrees. here's futuretrend. and we can see that things will start to pick up as we head to friday as we'll get the rain, but the northeast, well, they

police. she talked to reporters. and she lied to them all. now, she's talking to a new audience. a jury that could sentence her to death. >> did you ever meet an individual by the name of travis alexander? >> yes. >> reporter: on day two of her testimony, jodi arias finally told the jury about the moment she met the man she would later kill. she testified, travis alexander introduced himself at a las vegas convention. and they hit it off almost immediately. >> he was staring at my lips like he wanted to kiss me. but he didn't. >> reporter: it got more explicit from there. arias, walking the jury through their first intimate encounter. >> it felt apprehensive. but i was going with it. >> reporter: arias testified she never objected to any of alexander's advances. his sister sat stonefaced, as arias described their brother as the aggressor. she tried to convince the jury he repeatedly stabbed and shot

self-defense. >> did you kill travis alexander on june 4th, 2008? >> yes, i did. >> why? >> the simple answer is that he attacked me. and i defended myself. >> reporter: her testimony started with a bang monday. but she's been on the stand for more than five rambling hours now. literally holding court. she's relived old relationships. >> i'm kind of like -- one guy at a time kind of person. >> reporter: recounted irrelevant details. >> because he was from southern california. and liked the chargers in that area. >> reporter: even laughed while on trial for murder. >> it's entertainment training. you know what i mean? it's entertaining training, i guess you would say. >> reporter: all the while, the prosecutor is just sitting there, taking notes. he looks like he's ready to pounce. once he gets his chance on cross-examination. but he may have to wait a while, george. as we said, jodi arias likes to

talk. >> we can see that. ryan, thanks. we're going to turn to the latest trouble for chris brown. prosecutors are going to court in l.a. to claim that brown violated his probation after his 2009 attack on rihanna. they say he skipped out on community service. and matt gutman is here with that. >> reporter: one of the allegations is that he didn't complete a single hour of community labor in his home district of virginia. and he wasn't in the state on some of the days he was supposed to be picking up trash. the district attorney wants him to redo hundreds of hours of community service. this time, in l.a. chris brown, the bad boy crooner, please don't judge me, may not get his wish this morning. brown is slated to appear before a los angeles judge today, after new allegations the singer didn't do over 1,400 hours of community-focused labor he was ordered to perform in 2009. part of his sentence for pleading guilty to assaulting

his then and current girlfriend, rihanna. >> the defendant, chris brown, must not harass -- >> reporter: at the time, richmond's police chief agreed to supervise brown doing tasks like cleaning up trash and removing graffiti. instead, the d.a. says its investigation revealed no verifiable evidence he did any of the work saying the police department, at best, kept, quote, sloppy documentation. and at worst, provided fraudulent reporting. >> and if he didn't do these hours, the judge is going to give him a choice. either do it here in los angeles county so it can be verified. or simply go to jail. >> reporter: among the allegations, that on days brown was supposed to be doing labor, he wasn't in even richmond. the d.a. says one day the singer was on a private jet, headed for cancun, where the singer reportedly posted these photos on his blog. brown's attorney, mark geragos, denies those all gaegations.

saying that brown did not deny anything. and in a lengthy court motion, the d.a. cites several run-ins brown has had since on parole. even a fight with singer frank ocean. and allegations he swiped a cell phone from a clubgoer last year. allegations that geragos also denies. the richmond police couldn't be reached for a comment. now, if the judge finds that chris brown broke his probation, it is possible he could force him to serve all those hours in jail. george? >> matt, thanks. let's get more on this from "gma" legal analyst, dan abrams. lengthy filing. prosecutors put a lot of time in this. >> they're going from california to virginia, sending investigators to question floor cleaners whether they were cleaning the floors or chris brown cleaning the floors. there's no question they're spending more time on this case than they ordinarily night. on the other hand, prosecutors are all the time accused of letting celebrities off easy.

they're sort of stuck in a position where if they don't do enough, people will say, he got away with it. on the other hand, you have to say, is this worth the resources? >> meanwhile, brown's lawyers fighting back hard. saying they want sanctions from the lawyers for doing this. >> mark geragos is a well-known lawyer. and the way to conduct the case is to attack the prosecutor. but the notion they would get sanctions is a hollow threat. and remember, geragos is specifically highlighted in the motion made by the prosecutor, saying that he was coaching the lawyer for the richmond p.d., where he was serving the community service, on how to answer questions. geragos is also mentioned specifically in this motion. >> it does seem like there's enough there to make brown do more service. >> we'll see. the fundamental question in my mind is not going to come down to the other incidents. it's not going to come down to the cell phone. it's not going to come down to

anger management questions. did he serve the community service or didn't he? if he wasn't there and wasn't able to serve the community service, as he supposedly claimed he did, and signed off on, that's a big problem for him. >> dan abrams, thanks very much. we're going to start with gorgeous days into -- northeast, mid-atlantic. let's start with new york. wabc, in umber one in our hearts and also on your screens. a really nice shot this morning. and then, right down to washington, d.c., where the same situation is there. philly, you're sandwiched in the middle of this gorgeous day, as well. any of the light snow you had is going to go away today. numbers near 40 degrees, from new york to philly and into washington, d.c. pittsburgh, you're still about 28 degrees. this area of high pressure brings in the sunshine. you've got it during the day today. the west coast, opposite situation. you pick up the clouds and pick up the rain. it moves into seattle and portland and redding during the day today. that will drop south from san francisco into l.a. l.a., you'll start today with a

diminishing second amendment rights are rallying in annapolis. they want to make sure they have the right to bear arms. so governor o'malley right now at the same time is looking at tougher restrictions. he made it clear that gun control is a top priority this session. anne arundel county police are still looking for a teacher accused of stealing from a community charity. they've been searching now for pamela fowler for nearly three months. last month she was issued a number of traffic citations. the officer didn't realize sheriff's deputies had been looking for her and fowler was given permission to drive away. time now for a check on your weather. here's meteorologist lynette charles, before you head out the door to let you know what you're facing. >> all right, megan. yes, we are looking at kent island right now, and you know what? still dealing with a little bit of patchy fog across the area. but all in all things are starting to clear out nicely. we will begin to get more sunshine in here as we go later into the afternoon, but we are going to begin to warm temperatures up too as we go later into next week. now temperatures are above average this morning, coming in at 38 degrees already in glen burnie, 34 in reisterstown and
